I read with great interest the article by Edinboro et al (JAVMA, March 15, 2004, pp 879–886) describing an epidemiologic investigation of feline hyperthyroidism. The main finding of the case-control study was a higher risk for hyperthyroidism in cats that consumed canned foods (particularly from pop-top cans) versus non-canned foods. Can-lining plasticizers (specifically bisphenol-A or derivatives) were implicated as possible causative agents.
